Infielders: Renteria to the Giants, Loretta/Easley being eyed by the Diamondbacks...

MLB.com reports, the San Francisco Giants have signed free-agent shortstop Edgar Renteria to 2 year,  $18 million contract.

Renteria a career .290 hitter, batted .270 with 10 homers and 55 RBIs in 503 at-bats in 2008 with the Tigers. The five-time All-Star and two-time Gold Glove Award winner was paid $10 million this season, his second in the American League. Renteria played for Boston in 2005. The rest of his 13-year career has been spent in the National League with stints in Florida, St. Louis and Atlanta.

Update: 8:27 PM

Contrary to a report issued Monday by New York radio station WFAN, the Giants have not signed free-agent shortstop Edgar Renteria to a two-year contract.

"It's false," one of Renteria's agents, Barry Meister, flatly stated.
Said a Giants official, "If we have a deal with a player, we're going to announce it, I assure you."

MLB.com is reporting, the D-backs are also exploring the possibility of signing infielders Damion Easley and Mark Loretta.

Both can play multiple positions -- Easley played first, second, short, third and left for the Mets last year -- and either could be a complement to Vazquez at second as the club looks to replace Orlando Hudson.
