Where have you gone, Tom Seaver?
Even as the baseball front offices toss around millions of dollars like $1 casino chips on the craps table, I question why and more specifically, what for?
CC Sabathia has managed a good year and a half with a miserable three months mixed in from April 08 thru June 08, and for this, he is offered 150 million plus. Derek Lowe is a middle of the rotation gamer, and the GM's across the league value that at 10 to 15 million a year. AJ Burnett is the poster child for Johnson and Johnson, and would be more accurately named DL Burnett. Will someone please CC (carbon copy, not Sabathia) major league baseball and tell them to ease off the joystick and deploy a little risk and reward when signing a bunch of problems and injury risks. Then maybe, I can take my four year old to a game at Citi Field without taking out a personal loan at Citibank.
This is not fantasy baseball, the contract remains after the season, and the entire team is keepers. Just ask the Yank-mees in regard to the Carl Pavano years. Take a look at Tom Terrifics body of work, and then compare that to any major leaguer this side of Greg Maddox. And as fans, lets stop getting so pissy every time our team refuses to back up the Brinks truck for the next latest and greatest free agent. Why don't we invest wisely, saving a couple of shiny nickles for scouting and the farms. Let's find and nurture the next Tom Seaver, instead of buying the next Carl Pavano.

When did winning at all costs move from the playing field to the check book? I watched the Phillies and Rays compete in this years World Series; Hamels vs. Kazmir, Longoria vs. Howard, Upton vs. Utley, not a free agent signing in sight. The Mets need to improve their bullpen, but do they need to buy a new one. People keep saying this team freed up 20 million, that team freed up 30 million, they sound like my wife after a shopping spree at Saks' one day sale. She tells me she saved 600 dollars after spending 950 dollars. Where I come from, that dog don't hunt. Balance a payroll, a roster, scouting, a front office, and a farm system. Go get me K-Rod,or Fuentes, or both; but make sure you bring in some youth, re-stock the farm system, and put a team on the field that performs as well three years from now as the one I paid for today. And you can't put a price tag on heart, so see if there are any Ray Knights or Lenny Harris' out there. Let's not buy the next World Series, let's go out and do it the old fashion way and win it.
Oh, and as far as finding the next Tom Seaver, forget it. The last guy that came along that could even carry his cleats through it all away for some awesome party nights, right Doc. Mr. Seaver first towed the mound 40 years ago, a few days before I was even born. There hasn't been a Met pitcher to come along even in his class since.
Remember, $100,000,000.00 USD does not make the pitcher, 20 does. 20 wins, 20 seasons, 20 years since Doc broke our hearts. Thank you, Tom Seaver, and we do remember.
