Lennon: Squash those White Sox - Mets Rumors
According to David Lennon of Newsday , The rumor that the Mets are in talks of a blockbuster deal with White Sox are NOT true.
Here is exactly what he had to say:
Minaya always has refused to label any prospect "untouchable," but he kept Mike Pelfrey off the table last year at this time and he seems ready to do the same with Martinez. With the Mets connected to numerous reports involving White Sox outfielder Jermaine Dye and closer Bobby Jenks, it was not surprising to see Baseball Prospectus suggest that Minaya was discussing a "blockbuster" deal that could bring both to Flushing for a package centered on Martinez. But a person familiar with the situation said yesterday there was "nothing there."
Dye and Jenks would fill two of the bigger needs for the Mets, and the White Sox would require more than Martinez to agree to that deal. But Martinez, who turned 20 in October, is looking impressive again in the Dominican Winter League after another injury-plagued season at Double-A Binghamton.
Martinez was batting .323 with four home runs, 19 RBIs and a .382 on-base percentage in 28 games for Leones del Escogido. Compared with his .282 average for the B-Mets, along with eight homers in 86 games, Martinez appears ready for a breakthrough season.
