POSTGAME: Mets 3, Red Sox 2
The Mets (23-19) defeated the Red Sox (25-18) for the second straight night, thanks to a dramatic ninth inning courtesy of Omir Santos. Mike Pelfrey (4-1, 4.31) pitched stellar, notching a season-high six strikeouts, but it was reliever Pedro Feliciano (1-1, 2.65) who was credited with the win after the late-inning heroics. Jonathon Papelbon (0-1, 1.80) was charged with his first loss and blown save of the season, as he surrendered two runs in the top of the ninth to blow a one-run lead.
Mets Pitching

Gary Sheffield: 1 for 3, R, RBI
Omir Santos: 2 for 4, HR, 2 RBI
The Good:
- The Mets have rebounded from their awful series in Los Angeles by taking the first two at Fenway.
- Mike Pelfrey was even better tonight than he was in San Francisco, especially because he didn't have the "yips." Way to go, Big Pelf!
- Pedro Feliciano seems to be more reliable this year than he has ever been. Good choice in keeping him over Show, who by the way, I would like to express my deepest sorrow and sympathy for.
- Omir Santos is convincing me more and more each day that he, not Castro, should be the backup catcher to Brian Schneider. Ramon just doesn't do anything right anymore, whether it be at or behind the plate.
- Ramon Martinez actually played good defense tonight.
- Frankie Rodriguez was taken to the hospital before the game today after collapsing due to back spasms during batting practice. Get well soon, Frankie.
- Ramon Martinez struck out in a big spot late in the game tonight when the Mets had the tying run in scoring position with less than two outs. I'm sorry, but I'd much rather have the kid Coronado play shortstop than Martinez. Neither of them can swing it at all, but at least Coronado is a wizard with the glove.
- Papelbon's reaction to the close play at second in the ninth inning. It was a close call, and I'm not going to say whether they were right or wrong. But here's the thing, Papelbon: you not only blew the save, but you allowed the Mets to take the lead. If there is anyone you should be mad at, it's yourself. Get over it.
It is good to see the Mets catch a couple of breaks here and there for a change, and winning in Boston makes it even sweeter. Even better news? The Yankees (ugh) beat the Phillies in walk-off fashion today, after the Phillies blew a 4-1 lead. Thanks to the A-Bomb from A-Rod, the Mets are only one game back in the loss column.
With a win tomorrow, the Mets would finish their tough road trip with a record of 6-4, which is much better than most people thought they would do. I just hope Jose gets better soon because I really can't stand Ramon Martinez anymore. If he's going to hit this poorly, why not call up a kid who is chomping at the bit to get a chance? Jose Coronado may not hit the ball well, but he's as good as they come on the field, and football is not the only sport in which defense wins championships.
Bottom line, we need Reyes back. And Daniel Murphy needs to start hitting again, too.
Great win tonight, boys. Let's actually get a sweep tomorrow!
