POSTGAME: Brewers 6, Mets 3
The Mets (37-39) fell once more to the Brewers (42-35), even with Johan Santana on the mound. The Mets have now lost five straight, and things do not get any easier as the Brewers will send Yovani Gallardo to the hill this afternoon.
Notables
David Wright: 3 for 4, HR, 2 RBI
Ryan Church: 2 for 4, 2B
Nick Evans: 1 for 4, 2B
Fernando Martinez: 1 for 4, HR, RBI
The Good:
- F-Mart hit his first career F-Bomb off of Todd Coffey in the ninth inning.
- David Wright hit an opposite-field home run in the top of the first to strike first blood. There is no way that ball is out at Citi Field, so hopefully Wright has figured out how to tailor his swing to the ballpark he is playing at that day.
- Johan Santana gave up five earned in six innings of work, walking four and striking out four. Santana posted a 6.19 ERA in June, which is hardly good enough to qualify as an ace.
- Johan Santana was seen chewing out his teammates in the dugout, clearly knocking them (and possibly himself, too) for their performance. Here's my beef: this loss was all your fault, Johan. An anemic offense scored two runs for you in the top of the first, and you let the wind right out of the sails by giving it all back up before the fourth inning was over.
I'm sorry to say this, but Johan Santana is killing this team. He was the worst Mets' pitcher in June, and he continues to throw his teammates under the bus during and after each start. Sometimes he has a gripe, but not when he walks four and gives up five earned after acquiring an early lead.
Even if he is criticizing himself at the same time, he needs to just shut up and lead by example. Stop whining, Johan, because nobody likes a whiner. Just shut your mouth and pitch like the "ace" you are supposed to be.
